PLANTING TIPS

— Dig the planting hole anywhere from 1 to 2 times wider than the width of the root ball.
— Dig your hole so that the top of your ball will be 2-3 inches above ground level. You want to have your plant planted slightly higher for the best transplant ability.
— Before putting the plant in the hole remove plastic container or plastic shrink-wrapping if applicable. On a balled and burlaped plant, remove the burlap around the top of the ball and remove the top half of the wire basket.
— Carefully place the plant in the hole and face it for best viewing effect. Slice any circling or matted roots to allow for better root development.
— Fill the hole half full with a good soil mix, tamping soil lightly to ensure that there are no air pockets.
— If you have a clay type soil, mix two thirds of your existing soil with one third mushroom compost.
— If you have a sandy type soil, mix ½ of it with ½ peat moss.
— Fill the rest of the hole with the soil mix.
— Soak the plant thoroughly once all of the soil mix has been filled in.
— Since the trees will be planted slightly higher than the original root balls they should be staked to give stability against wind sway.
— Generously spread three to four inches of mulch material around the plant. The mulch should be three inches away from the main stem for air circulation and protection form rodent damage.
— Prune only any broken or damaged branches. Do not prune anything else. In addition to a quality soil mix, a starter fertilizer is recommended at time of planting and again 2 to 3 weeks later. This fertilizer has a high phosphorous analysis and a root-stimulating agent, which encourages root development.

WATERING

Proper Watering Is Critical to Plant Survival
Watering trees, shrubs, evergreens and other plants is simple: Apply sufficient water so that the soil around the roots is thoroughly moist and then allow to dry enough so that some air can penetrate the root ball area. Roots, like leaves, need oxygen and too much continuous water prevents the soil from “breathing”. The larger the plant (more roots) the more water it requires and the longer it takes for the soil to dry sufficiently. Moisture also depends upon the rainfall, temperatures, and soil conditions.

TREES/EVERGREENS
Three days after planting, the tree should be soaked again. During the first year, large trees should be soaked every week, unless there has been a heavy rainfall of 1" or more during the week. The second year, maintain watering at once per two weeks, unless there is 1" of rain. During periods of extended drought, water once a week. Continue watering through the middle of November.
The best method for watering trees is to place a hose at the perimeter of the hole and let the water soak slowly into the soil. Move the hose to ensure watering on all sides of the root ball. Approximately one hour of water should be sufficient, but you may need more or less depending on tree size. Do not spray the foliage.

SHRUBS
Shrubs may be watered individually by soaking the soil around each plant. For large plantings of shrubs, a soaker hose may make this task easier. Shrubs should be watered three times a week for the first 6 weeks, and twice a week for the rest of the season. During periods of extreme heat and or drought, you may need to water daily, especially on smaller material (1-2 Gallon). As with trees, you can skip watering when there has been 1" of rainfall.

FRUIT TREES

CULTURAL PRACTICES OF FRUIT TREES
Fruit trees need full sunlight. Inadequate sunlight delays the beginning of fruit production and will reduce the amount of fruit. Do not plant fruit trees near other trees where they will have to compete for soil space and nutrients. Prune young trees to develop a strong framework with a central leader and horizontal branches. Excessive upright growth will delay fruit bearing and reduce the quantity of fruit.

CLEMATIS

Clematis likes to be planted in full sun but prefers their roots shaded. Clematis is susceptible to "Clematis Wilt" when over watered. Keep soil on the dry side and plant some of the stem below soil line. There are three pruning groups for best flowering and should be pruned in early spring.

Group #1: Flowers only on old growth. Prune only weak or dead stems after flowering. Severe pruning or late pruning will result in fewer flowers the following spring but can rejuvenate a neglected plant.

Group #2: In this group all first flowering is from last year's stems. In early spring watch for swelling buds all along the existing stems & cut off dead material off above these swelling buds.

Group #3: Blooms only from new. This group should be pruned in February or March as new leaf buds begin to show low (8-12") on plant. All dead material above these buds should be removed.

DEFINITIONS  &  ABBREVIATIONS:
Classic Roses

Hybrid Teas, Floribundas and Grandifloras.
Grown for the superb quality of their individual flowers. Perfect for cutting. Need winter protection.

Hybrid Tea (HT)
Large flowers borne singly on long stems, usually fragrant. Blooms early summer until freeze.

Floribunda (FL)
Medium size flowers borne mostly in clusters on stems of medium length. Often more compact than Hybrid Teas. Blooms late spring through autumn.

Grandiflora (GR)
Large flowers borne in clusters. Usually taller in habit. Individual stems within each cluster are suitable for cutting.

Own Root (OR)
Classic roses grown on their own roots, not grafted, for improved hardiness and form.

Climbers and Ramblers

Roses whose long canes (6 to 15') can be trained to climb trellises, fences or walls. Variable in flower size, form and habit

David Austin (DA) English Roses

Modern roses developed by English rose breeder David Austin. A cross between old-fashioned and modern roses. Flowers are double and bloom repeatedly throughout the season. Most are hardy and disease resistant, fragrant, low maintenance plants.

Shrub (Landscape) Roses

Including shrubs, hedges and groundcovers. Free-blooming plants with differing flower sizes and forms; broadly varying in mature size with a full bushy attractive habit — generally less leggy and less rigidly upright than Hybrid Teas. Good disease resistance and hardiness, often grown on their own roots.

Miniature Rose

Small-flowered roses with proportionately smaller foliage, often very compact in habit. Stems are shorter but still suitable for cutting.
